Rolling Stone posed six questions to My Chemical Romance singer/comic book artist/proud Jersey boy Gerard Way. He professed his love of Joan of Arc, squids and Ziggy Stardust (and discussed what it was like being “touched in the head”).

What’s the most rock-star thing you’ve ever done?
That’s really hard to come up with. I haven’t done anything rock star. I walked into a club in Canada with sunglasses on. I thought it would be cool. It was a total dick move.

What was your favorite album at age fourteen?
Live After Death by Iron Maiden. Easily. I listened to that thing for five years straight. That’s one of the things that really made me want to be a live performer.

How do you like to spend downtime on tour?
I write my comic book, which is amazingly fun. And I want to do serious paintings of Joan of Arc and squids. Joan of Arc is my favorite historical-legendary-whatever figure. Number one, it’s a boyish, waifish girl in a suit of armor on a white horse, and that’s badass. I’ve always been attracted to that character because it was somebody who was willing to die for what they believed in, and they were probably fucking crazy and like, touched by the hand of God, and I believe in that shit. I totally believe in that stuff. I believe that it can happen to anybody.
Like when we started this band, there was a brief amount of time where it felt like you drank gasoline and shit glass, and you were always covered in your own sweat, somebody else’s spit or blood or something. And I felt that, you know what I mean? I would make crazy speeches that made no sense onstage. I would talk about purifying flames being shot out of our cabinets at max volume to destroy evil and shit like that. I was, you know, touched in the head. And really, when you get touched in the head like that, I think your job at that point for the rest of your career is to remember what it was like to be touched in the head, and kind of keep that going. ‘Cause that can’t last forever, you’ll be dead, I think. Like Joan of Arc. So, yeah, I love Joan of Arc. And squids. Honestly, the shapes, the disgustingness of them, the suckers, the fact that they’re in the ocean. I’m a huge Hellboy fan so I draw lots of squids.

Who’s the coolest famous person you’ve ever met?
Johnny Marr. It was in Norway at a festival. He was amazing. He came up to get something signed for his daughter, and I basically nerded out on him. We talked a lot about Portland, OR, because he’s living there and I’m thinking of living there.

Name three records on your current playlist.
1) LostAlone, Say No to the World. They’re a really young, three-piece band from Nottingham. It’s a perfect record. There aren’t a lot of those. It’s a rock band but it’s really new-sounding. It’s fresh. It makes me feel angsty again and I haven’t heard anything that makes me feel that way in a long time.

2) David Bowie, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars. I listen to that all the time, but lately I’ve been listening to it front to back. It’s my desert-island album.

3) Mew, Frengers. It’s the album before the new one, and it’s great. They’re one of my favorite new bands ever.

When do you think you’ll know it’s time to retire?
When inside it doesn’t feel special anymore. Or if I can’t keep a personal sense of ownership anymore. If we can’t keep a sense it’s ours anymore, we’ll walk away.

Gerard Way to publish "The Umbrella Academy" in September

My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way has announced the release date for the first issue of his comic book series, The Umbrella Academy. First promised in July of 2006, the series will be published by maverick publisher Dark Horse, home of Hellboy and Conan which became films, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Terminator and Star Wars which took the opposite route.

Gerard described the storyline to MTV:

A closet space alien has adopted seven extraordinary children to save the world. He never tells [them] from what. He's a really bad father, and he dies of a heart attack, and they are all kind of stuck to figure out the rest." The biggest idea with the comic for me was, number one, writing a comic, I've been wanting to write one. It's fun. I think I can say something I can't necessarily say with my music. But also, I wanted to get people into comic shops, people who normally wouldn't [go], because I love the medium.

Way is no fly-by-night comic book geek either, mentioning an obscure Watchmen reference that appeared on the band's major label debut, Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge.

He also addressed fan speculation about the band's follow up to The Black Parade:

We're not working on a record, We're touring and getting some distance from writing music. We'll finish out touring, take a break and then come back and write. It will be quite awhile before there's another My Chemical Romance album.

Comic news sites Newsarama and Comic Book Resources each spoke with the frontman on the project. The CBR feature displays numerous pages of art from the first issue.

The vocal interplay between Mike Shinoda and Chester Bennington already makes Linkin Park one of the most distinct sounding bands in their genre. Even so, this year they stretched alt.metal even further, collaborating with legendary producer Rick Rubin. From where we sit, the effort paid off.

Best Director
Although best known as Linkin Park's turntablist, Joe Hahn has leveraged his band's success to build a flourishing career in music video direction. Aside from directing most of Linkin Park's videos, Hahn has also worked with Static-X, Story of the Year, Xzibit and others. Shot in the California desert, "What I've Done," hits close to the band's heart as it address a number of environmental issues.

Best Editing
Linkin Park's nature-loving desert epic mixes stop-action, stock footage and live performances to make a political statement about the condition of the Earth.

Wooo hooooooooooooo, congrats to LP for the nominations. Bravo! Now, let's just hope they win. Which is kinda hard because all these major music awards favoured pop music. If you look at the nominees list, it is dominated by the likes of Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, Rihanna et cetera. Can we have a major annual Rock Music Awards or something?

My Chemical Romance's Gerard Way Hopes To Get Fans 'Into Comic Shops'; Says Band Isn't Prepping New LP

My Chemical Romance's Gerard Way has always loved comic books.

His first job, in high school, was at a local comic book shop in New Jersey. He didn't actually collect a paycheck each week — his compensation came in the form of free comic books. He idolized the likes of Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore, Frank Miller and Grant Morrison. Long before the band was formed, Way attended the School of Visual Arts in New York, where he majored in illustration and cartooning. He wanted to be a comic book artist so badly that he later interned at DC Comics.

That dream never panned out, which is perhaps for the best. Now that Way has made a name for himself as the leader of My Chemical Romance, it's been much easier for him to launch The Umbrella Academy, a new book he's been working on with artist Gabriel Bá. The volume hits stores through Dark Horse Comics on September 19.

Way unveiled the book over the weekend at San Diego's Comic-Con 2007, where he admitted that it's kind of hard to describe just what The Umbrella Academy is all about.

"It's much like when we were starting the band — the band was very hard to explain to people, and they just kind of had to hear it," he said between signings. "I tell people they just have to read the comic. But in short, a [closeted] space alien has adopted seven extraordinary children to save the world. He never tells [them] from what. He's a really bad father, and he dies of a heart attack, and they are all kind of stuck to figure out the rest."

The series starts off when the members of the Umbrella Academy, now well into their adult years and disbanded, learn that their adoptive father, Sir Reginald Hargreeves, has died. When news of a world-ending threat is made public, the former team members must put their differences aside and unite to do what they've been trained to do — save us all from impending doom. Think X-Men, but with a more gothic feel.

"The biggest idea with the comic for me was, number one, writing a comic," he explained. "I've been wanting to write one. It's fun. I think I can say something I can't necessarily say with my music. But also, I wanted to get people into comic shops, people who normally wouldn't [go], because I love the medium.

"A lot of books had a very big impact on me, and they kind of shaped my lyrics, the band's aesthetic, everything," he continued. "There's a song called 'The Ghost of You' on [2004's Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge], which is named after a perfume ad in the Watchmen [graphic-novel series]. Comics have been such a big part of me and the band for such a long time, and I just want people to check out comics."

As for the rumors that My Chemical Romance had begun writing material for the follow-up to 2006's The Black Parade, Way said there's no truth to them.

"We're not working on a record," he said. "We're touring and getting some distance from writing music. We'll finish out touring, take a break and then come back and write. It will be quite awhile before there's another My Chemical Romance album. We said a lot of what we wanted to say with Black Parade, so we're going to have to find something completely new to say, and that could take some living, some touring, some hardships. It's all about finding what the next thing is for yourself, for your band, and we're still searching for that. We'll be searching for a while, I think."

The band has quashed its beef with Marilyn Manson, which is good, Way said, "because I hate talking about it." A couple of months back, Manson said in an interview with The London Paper that he'd written the song "Mutilation Is the Most Sincere Form of Flattery," from his new album Eat Me, Drink Me, as an attack on My Chemical Romance. Said Manson: "I'm embarrassed to be me because these people are doing a really sad, pitiful, shallow version of what I've done." Way later responded that nothing Manson could say would bring the band down, writing it off as Manson using the MCR name to promote his latest LP.

"There's really nothing going on there," he said. "We played a festival in Norway with them, and [guitarist] Frank [Iero] just went up to them, said hi and asked if there was anything wrong. They said no, and that was the end of it."

06/01/07 : Matt's Week
We just got back from the tour with My Chemical Romance, where I was one of the only people on the entire tour not to go down with salmonella. So, I've been back home in Italy, making pasta and swimming in the lake. Plus, I'm trying to deal with a bunch of Italian builders who are building a studio for me at home. It's not just a studio, it's a bunch of rooms - a second attempt at a space for us to live and work together when we make the next album, Monkees style.

It's really stressful trying to deal with builders, they're all very relaxed, to say the least. Every time I come down they seem to be just sunbathing or having a swim in the lake. I think I'm a bit too friendly. Otherwise they wouldn't be swimming in the lake all day.

Any time in between that I'm on the phone with the crew trying to work out the stage set for Wembley. I'm moving into a calm-before-the-storm period. I was panicking a few months ago. Preparations have been going on for about six months, but I'm starting to zone out now. If we don't get it in place, I'm going to let it happen by itself.

I've been listening to... Hadouken! - That Boy That Girl
I'm not really sure what sort of music you would call it, bit there's some really extreme sampling going on. It's interesting, I'd quite like to hear more of what they do.

Not much needs to be said about Linkin Park. As one of the biggest rock bands around today, the Californian sextet took the world by storm with their debut album Hybrid Theory in 2000 and continued their raging success with Meteora in 2003. Along the way, there was a remixed album titled Collision Course with Jay Z and Mike Shinoda formed his side project Fort Minor.

Despite the distractions, the band took it back to the studio and spent over 14 months to work on their latest album Minutes To Midnight, a 12-track record produced by Rick Rubin and Shinoda.

"We're straying away from a lot of the predictable sounds we've had in the past, but there's no question in your mind when you hear it that it's Linkin Park," said frontman Chester Bennington in an MTV interview. "We've always said we write the music we write so that we can spread our wings as far as we want and try new things and go anywhere. I think we're really going to prove that with this new record."

New sound in tow, the band once again delivered another chart-topping album, with its lead single “What I’ve Done” debuting at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Modern Rock Tracks. The nu-metal sound might be long gone, but Linkin Park is definitely reinventing its wheel for longevity in the music scene.

I know I’m kinda slow, but life has been hectic and I’ve just got back from Hong Kong. I’ve only managed to get my Linkin Park’s new album, "Minutes to Midnight" last night and ripped it into my iPod. The boyfriend got me the pre-order copy that comes with a free poster. Nice!

The bf has finished listening to the whole album and he didn’t like it a bit. Well, he isn’t a LP fan in the first place so I don’t blame him. He doesn’t get my passion for LP, MCR, Muse et cetera; just like I don’t get his passion for Moby, Depeche Mode, Underworld et cetera.Anyway, I’m now at my 4th song, ‘Shadow of the Day’ which feels overly U2-ish. But damn, I love the direction and the feel of the album already! I’m just so glad the rest of the songs are not disappointing like the first single ‘What I’ve Done’ (yes, I admit I was kinda disappointed with it when it first came out). Linkin Park confirmed today the fourth installment of Projekt Revolution beginning July 25th and culminating on September 3 in Denver at the Coors Amphitheatre (routing below). Fans can expect to see Linkin Park, My Chemical Romance, Taking Back Sunday, HIM, Placebo and Julien-K on the Main Stage and Mindless Self Indulgence, Saosin, The Bled, Styles of Beyond and Madina Lake on the Revolution Stage. Tickets go on sale nationwide on May 19th but LP Underground members will be able to take part in exclusive presale and meet & greet opportunities. This album was produced by Mike Shinoda and Rick Rubin. The much awaited first single, "What I've Done", was released on April 2nd 2007.

The album was delayed many times, first scheduled for summer 2006, then fall 2006, then early 2007, and now May 14, 2007. "When songs are pouring out you don't ever want to stop that. We already have over 100 roughs for songs," said Mike Shinoda, "We've narrowed it down since but we're not ready to commit to those yet." From the early demo sessions, "Qwerty", which was rumored to be on Minutes to Midnight, has appeared on the Linkin Park Underground v6.0 CD on December 5, 2006 in both live and studio demo versions. It has been confirmed that "Qwerty" and the other songs on the LPU CD will not appear on the new album.

"This was a year-and-a-half long process of really hard work and experimentation in the studio that yielded about 150 rough songs," guitarist Brad Delson tells Billboard.com. The band recorded 17 tracks and is now whittling down which ones will make the final cut. "Not only is this album incredibly diverse, but the depth of the material is really strong,” Delson says.

Minutes to Midnight will be the Linkin Park's first album to receive a Parental Advisory sticker.

Fans Counting The 'Minutes' As Linkin Park Reveals Album Name & Release Date

Los Angeles, CA (March 6, 2007) – The anticipation and rumors about multi-platinum Grammy® award-winning Linkin Park's third studio album were finally answered today, with the announcement that the record, entitled Minutes to Midnight, will hit stores May 15th on Warner Bros. Records/Machine Shop Recordings. Co-produced by Mike Shinoda and 2007 Grammy Producer of The Year Rick Rubin (U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Run DMC), Minutes to Midnight was recorded at the infamous Mansion at Laurel Canyon and is already being touted by critics who have heard it as the band's best and most important work to date.

The first single, "What I've Done," will be released worldwide April 2, 2007.

"We have put more into the new album than anything we have ever done before," says bassist Dave "Phoenix" Farrell. The band spent over 14 months in the studio and wrote more than 100 song demos in the making of Minutes To Midnight, an album which vocalist Mike Shinoda sees as, "a breakthrough in the development of the band's sound. We wrote in new ways, and used instruments and equipment we hadn't experimented with, from vintage guitars and amps to mellotron to Rick's original 808 drum machine he used on the Beastie Boys first record. We tried to question every step in our songwriting process." Producer Rick Rubin agrees, "They really are reinventing themselves, it doesn't sound like rap-rock. There's very strong songwriting. It's very melodic...a progressive record."

The coming weeks will see the launch of LPTV, a series of webisodes that can be viewed on http://www.linkinpark.com/. The series will focus on "unseen footage of the history of Linkin Park, building up to an inside look at the studio experience of the new album," says Farrell. MUSE: ROCK FOR CLEVER PEOPLE

Muse are the greatest British rock heretics of the new century. When they first cast strange and exhilarating shadows over the musical landscape at the tail end of the 90s, the cultural orthodoxy was not looking for an audacious, ambitious, heavy neo-classical metalcorepunk hyper-rock band, with a precocious, vocally soaring, 22 year old singer, apparently fallen from a distant galaxy. The times were seeking familiar, dependable sounds. Muse were neither, and yet by the time of their second album in 2001 they were playing European arena shows to 20,000 astonished onlookers, destroying extravagant amounts of equipment, filling the music press with tales of debauchery and crashing the pop charts. They must have being doing something contrarily right.

It's tempting to begin to explain Muse's maverick development as a consequence of growing up in the relative musical backwaters of Teignmouth in Devon. True, the knock on effects of mid 90s Britpop would be less powerfully felt in their small coastal hometown. To the schooldays phase of three friends trying out darkly rocking early versions of the band away from the pressures of scenes and tactics, you could throw in the now requisite information that singer-songwriter-guitarist-keyboardist Matt Bellamy's father was in legendary 60s hit group The Tornadoes, and that his mother was a medium with a taste for the operatic rock of Queen. That version of Muse's progress, where they fall in love with 90s alternative rock and cut the intensity with Matt's love of early 20th century classical music, does little justice to the vertiginously tiered inner workings of their music. Personal histories and genre reference points are unreliable signposts to the place that Muse have come to inhabit. Shouldn't the children of melancholy seaside resorts turn into sepia loving poets of yesteryear? Wouldn't it be normal to run in the opposite direction from parental influences? It would make as much sense for Muse to have turned into maudlin retro DJs as the vaulting psychotic metal balladeers that they've become. If the mechanisms within Muse are to be understood at all, the best we're going to get is glimpses via Matt. "Irrespective of whether I was doing it for other people, making music is something I would be doing anyway," he says "Because there's a unique feeling that I get when I'm playing music. I think it could be one of the most pleasurable things, in terms of whatever's going on. For me it's something that's always been good, something that makes everything else seem unimportant.

"It's not just a case of personal pleasure - that makes it seem like it's a pleasing activity which releases endorphins. It's not like that. Making music effects the way I perceive everything and it gives me balance in my own reality. It's something that I can't really explain very well." While so much allegedly modern rock music has given up the struggle to express anything new or complex, preferring to stick with preordained codes, Muse persist in attacking the genre as if it was unbreakable. Happily steered by three musicians with extraordinary technical skills, Bellamy, bassist Chris Wolstenholme and drummer Dominic Howard have been able to operate on a larger scale -a rock band with the cheek and grand foolishness to believe there are no restrictions, and few no go areas. They are the least mundane band on the planet. To the delight, perplexity and sometimes annoyance of the listening world, their records have consistently been extreme and extravagant flights of the imagination. Three albums down the line they show no sign whatsoever of bowing to the pressure of low expectation. If 1999's 'Showbiz' was the initial unfiltered statement of intent and 2001's 'Origin Of Symmetry' was Muse finding their feet on a larger musical stage, now comes 'Absolution', the bands most fully realised work yet. "?Showbiz' was all constructed whilst we were in Teignmouth together without any schedule or record company, without any of that vibe, and so we were just making music as we liked making music," reflects Dom. "So I think the first album you can probably hear that represents us as we were and who we were. I think the second album was very much that stage of confusion of getting record deals and travelling everywhere and not really knowing who you are, I think 'Origin Of Symmetry' represents that kind of feeling of confusion and not really know what?s going on.

"I think we knew that anything we were going to do after the second album we'd need to really find out who we are now, and to do that we needed to go back to making music for ourselves in our own space. And when you're making music and going home afterwards, or spending a few days a week here and then all going home, the music takes on a more personal feeling and I think you can hear that on this album.? adds Chris. Muse took a considered route to album three. After ending 2002's heavy touring at Reading and Leeds festivals they set up their own studio in Hackney, East London and gradually began writing songs. The first sessions for 'Absolution' took place at the end of 2002 in Air studios, working with Paul Reeve, who produced their first EPs. Here they brought in a full orchestra and after headed down to Sawmills in Devon for some finishing touches. Having then been contacted by US producer Rich Costey (Rage Against The Machine, Audioslave, Fiona Apple, Mars Volta, Phillip Glass) they moved on to Grouse Lodge in Ireland and eventually L.A., with Costey producing. The orchestras were set aside in favour of a less ornate approach and concentrating on song arrangements. Having yet to reach a point of stasis in their own lives and finding that global events were changing the world around them, the band had no shortage of songwriting inspiration. Complete sonic re-invention could be thought about later. For album three there was enough to do, perfecting, enhancing and extending their body of work. "Everywhere you move you're taking into consideration loads of previous styles musically have existed, whether it was a hundred years ago or a few years ago or whatever, " says Matt. "You're assimilating all of those different paradigms and trying to make some kind of new paradigm that makes sense of all of them, of course mixed with modern ideas as well. I think that?s what generally creating stuff is about for me.

"And I think we established a certain sound on the last album and I think on 'Absolution' there are some songs that are continuations, but we tried to take the ideas to a higher level. A song like 'Stockholm Syndrome' could be similar to stuff on the last album but it?s more evolved. But there are also songs on this album that have completely new ideas. Songs like 'Endlessly', 'Blackout', 'Butterflies And Hurricanes', 'Hysteria' - those kinds of songs are definitely like nothing we?ve done before." 'Absolution' is clearly the product of three mid twenties musicians at the height of their powers, determined to push their aesthetic all the way. It opens with the Armageddon drums and crazed piano drama of 'Apocalypse Please', with Matt at full stretch, proclaiming the end of the world. From baroque panoramas depicting the madness of fanaticism they cut to slinky feline hyper emotional rock 'Time Is Running Out' and then part the curtains on the dreamy, filmic, macabre love song 'Sing for Absolution'. With 'Stockholm Syndrome? they lock into the cyber-punk-fugue mode, Matt hurling grand piano against the wall of guitars. The softly ticking tenderness of 'Falling Away With You' provides respite, before 'Hysteria's Bach-bassline'd haute grunge stomp. With 'Blackout' they slide into an orchestral waltz fit for Covent Garden (in the year 2030), followed by an opening out into the synth and string driven optimism of 'Butterflies And Hurricanes' (featuring the world's only Rachmaninov style rock-house breakdown), and the warm organ groove of 'Endlessly', a song that you might think to be under the influence of electronic pop, if it wasn't by the 'doomy cyber rock band' Muse. From grooves and highly human emotions they take you on a thrilling ride down an Escher's worth of spiral staircase guitars - 'Thoughts Of A Dying Atheist', plunge into the dirty riffs and anger of 'TSP' and float to the fade with the eerie 'Rule By Secrecy', leaving in their wake just a dazed grand piano and sense of having travelled to the ends and back. The musical intention for album three was to hone their art as a rock band and open up the possibilities of grooves and electronics (Matt: "I'm actually interested in the cheesier side of that area,") whilst also investigating where they could go with "large ensembles, orchestras, choirs." The thought processes behind the lyrics were more reactive, possibly more visibly reportage based than has happened before. If Matt's tendency to follow thought processes to the edge of reason, and then leap, had previously given the impression that warmth and humanity were not his style, there is much on 'Absolution' to contradict that view. Global wars and new emotional territory have their effect. "I came out of a six year relationship and entered into a new relationship, that was a pretty major thing for me," he explains. "And world events played a reasonably large role too. There was a moment of panic and fear, and I think everyone that lives in London can probably relate to that. I think that was having an impact on what was happening with the album. We're not an intensely political band or anything, but when things like that are happening, you can't ignore it and it influences the way you feel about life and the world. "It creates feelings of mistrust for the people in power, feelings of extreme mistrust of what is the media, government, secret government etc - that feeling of helplessness, that?s where the more extreme moments of fear and panic and apocalyptic feelings are coming from. How that feeds into the other personal angle is that I suppose in that situation, you look at the things that are really important to you, friends, family, freedom of thought or whatever, and maybe you start to realise the importance of those things that maybe you didn't see before.

"At the same time listening to music by bands like The Flaming Lips and Romantic/Early modern Classical Music made me realise that it is possible to make music that goes beyond everyday life and beyond life in general, something timeless that speaks about existence and can still be related to after the composers death? I?m not saying that?s we are doing, but maybe what we are trying to do. I think it is possible to find something on a more spiritual level, which is something I've never really considered before, because I?m not really a spiritual person, but I have started to consider those things maybe for the first time whilst making this album." And the 'Absolution' that's being sought? Musing on love, loss, finality and fanaticism may have brought Matt to a less science-fixated, empirical understanding of the world, but he is hardly ripe for conversion. "I think the absolution is not necessarily a religious word," says Matt. "It has meanings of purity, but its not necessarily talking from a Christian or any particular religious point of view. I think it’s just suggesting that the act of making music is a way of understanding things." Unwilling to settle for the option of being simply brilliant exponents of a particular genre, Muse insist that their music is a personal tool, a prism through which to make sense of the world. That doesn't mean they're unable to see the moments where (particularly on stage) the intensity touches on absurdity. They're intentionally over the top at times. But oddly for a band with serious thought processes behind what they do, they are low on contrivance. Muse are not acting rhapsodic mind-fire rock. They are not 'showbiz'. They were always like this. It's innate. It's meant. None of the genius in the earlier phases could have manifested itself without the attitude that pervades everything they do - an attitude of this could do more, say more, go further, faster, heavier, sweeter. You can hear the will to push things further in all of 'Origin Of Symmetry'. It's probably what got that album's big single 'Plug In Baby' drilling into the album charts in spring 2001 and what lead them to cover the Nina Simone classic 'Feeling Good' reinterpreting the song for a new generation. Its why 'Sunburn' from the first John Leckie produced album 'Showbiz' grabbed everyone's attention, and first pushed the band in front of the UK media at the start of 2000.

The need to make something beyond what's expected was why they were plucked from gigging in bars and small clubs in Devon, given the keys to the best recording studio in the vicinity, signed a worldwide record deal with Taste Media, were flown out to America and penned a licensing deal within days. Its how it came about that Mushroom took them on in the UK, and Japan and Europe fell for them turning them into one of the biggest festival draws and arena bands. It would be the driving force behind live shows which make you think you've witnessed the start of a new era in extreme rock stagecraft, and conclude that anyone who can play uber-flash guitar as dazzlingly as Bellamy while bouncing off the drum kit must actually be an alien. Whether it's ambition, hauteur, super-competitiveness, curiosity or just low boredom thresholds, Muse have always had it and for the exact duration of time that it's necessary to buy their records, they always will. Their heretical momentum is showing no sign of letting up. There they go, up in the sky, a silver flying v, on a mission to explode the myth of English meekness and reserve. "I think that the greatest rock music in the past has been from England, and I think that if I was going to say something positive or hopeful about Muse it would be that we want to be that, to do that, to prove that England isn't just about soft stuff, and that there's more to English life than that. "I don't really know many English bands that do rock music of a relatively modern nature, and I think that we're definitely trying to, not necessarily go against it, but prove that there is a lot more to it. A lot of what has been rock oriented in the last ten years in England, the extremely original stuff has been very mellow, the rockier stuff has been old, 'dadrock', retro, and I think its about time there was an English rock band that was bold enough to actually be a rock band and not hide behind old established genres or hide behind self-consciousness."

Look no further. Muse are overhead now.

But here's why you should really give a damn about Hoobastank, and their third album Every Man for Himself.

SEVEN AMAZINGLY FASCINATING THINGS ABOUT HOOBASTANK:
1) Guitarist Dan Estrin has a great story involving brain surgery and a catheter.

In 2003, during the band's tour for its multi-platinum second album The Reason, Estrin made a fateful purchase. "Everyone in the band rides street bikes and motocross bikes," says the guitarist. "I was fucking around on a mini-bike that I just bought. I was riding one around after a show ... and I smashed my head into concrete." The result? "They had to cut my head open. I just remember, before the surgery, I had two fears: they'd have shave my head and I'd wake up with a catheter in me. So I wake up, and lo and behold, my head's shaved and there's a tube in my dick."

2) There are flutes and seven minute songs on the new album (blame Pink Floyd).

If you liked the infectious pop-rock stylings of the last two Hoobastank albums, you'll enjoy Every Man for Himself just as much, if not more. That said, Every Man does offer up some variety, even while maintaining the band's core sound. The epic "More Than a Memory", for example, features flutes, accordion, chimes and trumpets. "I was listening to a lot of Pink Floyd at the time, especially The Wall," remembers Estrin. "I like albums, and songs, that take you on a journey, that almost come across as a movie. And that song definitely does - it's like Floyd, the Beatles, and even tails off like "Sir Psycho Sexy," that old Red Hot Chili Peppers song. I just like applying lessons from bands I admire."

3) Did we mention the Journey influence?

Listen to "Moving Forward" and prepare to recognize a very familiar classic rock refrain. "We wrote that song when Doug was driving one day and heard Journey's 'Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin' on the radio," says Estrin. "We like Journey; we're not huge fans, but I really liked that 'na na na na' part of the song." He laughs. "I don't think it's stealing. We made it our own style."

4) Music critics despise them. The feeling is mutual.

"The album comes out in April. I expect we'll do some shows, meet fans, and have
critics ready to tear it apart," says Robb. "Honestly, I want to go 'fuck it, it's not for you, it's for me and the guys in the band.' If we're happy with it, that's what counts. We get a lot of shit because we don't go out of our way to be 'different' ... we're just trying to be who we are. And that's actually the theme of the album - being yourself."

5) Speaking of message boards, you can find a lot of fun, weird stuff about Hoobastank on theirs... and some of it might be true.

Dan used to be a roadie for Incubus. Chris worked in a plant nursery for 5 years. Doug and Dan used to be counselors at the YMCA. The name of the band? It's the "H" in Jesus H. Christ. At least, that's what Doug will tell you.

6) That's a real drill sergeant on the album. He's there for a reason.

"Born to Lead" features the barking cadence of Sgt. Dale Guy. "I wouldn't want him there all the time, but he was cool," says Robb. "The song was about people wishing and praying for things instead of doing something to accomplish their dreams. It's about getting off your ass, and I think the Sarge added a lot to the song's vibe."

7) They recorded Every Man for Himself in a really backward, inefficient, grueling kind of way.

The band started work on the album during Hooba's last mega-tour. Estrin would come up with musical ideas during sound checks, then record a demo later, hand it off to Doug for melodies and lyrics, and finally, fly home with the whole band to record the finished product during non-tour weekends. "It wasn't an ideal way of roing things," admits Robb. "But I think, strangely, it affected us in a positive way. Maybe it was the energy of being on tour, but I think the results came out far better than our previous two records."

My Chemical Romance Bring "The Black Parade" to Philly

If you've heard My Chemical Romance's bombastic new single "Welcome to the Black Parade" -- a symphonic screamo pastiche of Queen's arena pomp and the Beatles' filigree, filtered through the Jersey quartet's own brain-shaking crunch -- you might think the pop-punk titans are entering their "difficult" phase.

A mock press conference now showing on the band's MySpace page (if you have the mettle to endure the whole of this pretentious Q&A session) will do little to convince you otherwise. Among other things, they discuss the alter egos and the concepts (death, mostly) informing their forthcoming album The Black Parade, due October 24th.

Thankfully, these highfalutin' talking points have yet to permeate the band's onstage persona. Judging from the very un-difficult hour-long throttling My Chem inflicted upon a batshit-crazy crowd at Philadelphia's Trocadero Theatre last night for the MTV2-sponsored "$2 Bill" concert (airing Saturday September 16th), we won't see many distraught fans threatening to leap from atop mall escalators.

MTV cameras and a predictable crowd warm-up by the film crew notwithstanding, it was frontman Gerard Way who got the crowd all lathered. Slithering across the stage in his Sgt.-Pepper-by-way-of-Hot-Topic jacket and sporting closely cropped platinum hair that suggests a more poster-friendly Johnny Rotten, Way set the crowd on fire with the flailing set opener, "Give 'Em Hell Kid." (This new look is purportedly Way's attempt to inhabit the body of the album's sickly central character, The Patient.) The martial drum intro to "Cemetery Drive" slowed things down just enough that everyone in the audience could pump their fists in unison.

These staples, plucked from the band's first major-label album, Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge -- along with the surge of melodic angst that was "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)" and the spastic finale "Helena" -- were the crowd-pleasing rallying cries. Still, the handful of new tracks selected from The Black Parade more than held their own.

If not instant classics, songs like the aforementioned "Welcome to the Black Parade" (which received an altogether decent stripped-down treatment) and the lighter-friendly ballad "Cancer" (not as dour as the title would imply) will assuredly distance My Chem further from the Warped band pack. And that's a good thing.

A pair of punch-drunk, hooky shuffles stood out among the newer songs. The crowd instantly latched onto the la-la-la refrain in "Dead!" (perhaps owing to the magic of file-sharing). A "Mr. Brownstone"-style intro and "Detroit Rock City" kicks gave "House of Wolves" a joyous arena-rock feel. Both sounded fairly excellent upon first listen.

If this is the "difficult" path My Chemical Romance is headed down, it's totally okay. Promise.

At the Toronto Film Festival: Kurt Cobain Narrates His Own Bio Film From the Grave

The highly-anticipated documentary “Kurt Cobain: About A Son,” had its world premiere last night at Toronto’s Cumberland Theatre, leading a slew of music-centric films slated to debut at the Toronto Film Festival later this week. Director AJ Schnack culled twenty-five hours of audiotaped interviews conducted by writer Michael Azerrad for his 1993 book Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana; the effect is that Cobain narrates his own story.

The soundtrack, curated by Seattle musician/producer (and Nirvana collaborator) Steve Fisk and Death Cab For Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard, compiles music that served as inspiration for the singer; no Nirvana music is included, which may upset some fans. But the candid conversations with Azerrad that make up the bulk of the film offer a nice glimpse of Cobain’s humor and foresight. “I hope people get a sense of him that they haven’t before,” Schnack said before the screening.

Mike's latest chat in LPU sheds some lights on the new album. So here I posted the chat transcript from LPU (hope I don't get banned or anything for this) for the benefits of you all who has dropped out of LPU for the moment. If you are too lazy to read all, below are some details on the new album:

1. 'qwerty'
(Some of you have already received it thru MSN from me. Thanks to DJ Nico for sending it to me in the first place.)
- the name is a rough title - still in progress - LP did those lyrics on the plane on the way to japan - hasn't confirm whether it'll make the album

2. New album release
- supposed to be out at the end of this year - at this point LP doesn't see that happening - they're doing really well, but just need a little more time - not sure how soon - that's why they played the new song live, to give the fans a little insight into how things are going.

3. How the new album will sound
- it will sound familiar - fans will recognize it as LP; but so far it has a different sound that cannot be described - it sounds like it's older, but not vintage - more organic in some spots

mshinoda (10:07):i don't know yet. we're still working on it. we have narrowed it down to about 30-50 songs, andsome of those are heavy, some are softer, and some are in between.

mshinoda (10:09):the song known as "qwerty" -- a rough title BTW -- is actually still in progress. we did those lyrics on the plane on the way to japan! i'm not sure if it'll make the album, but we liked the song enough to play it!

mshinoda (10:09):i see guitar tabs and lyrics floating around online--they're not perfect, but they're close.

mshinoda (10:10):on the next album - collaborations? we don't really ever do collabos on our proper studio albums, and i think we're going to stick to that for now. we don't have any plans to work with other artists at this point.

mshinoda (10:14):independent marketing vs. external distribution vs. major label -- it depends on your group / band / artist. if you're peaches or MF doom, independent will let you

mshinoda (10:14):do things that are less commonly accepted, if you're shakira, you should probably go major.

twix (10:14):Hey there, hope all the recording of the new album is going well. I was curious if you can see LP releasing a new single and music video before the end of 2006? or would it be more realistic to see a new (studio recorded) song & video in early 2007?

mshinoda (10:15):origianlly, we thought we'd have an album out at the end of this year, but at this point we don't see that happening. we're doing really well, but we just need a little more time.

mshinoda (10:26):i think the fans will be there if they like the music. it doesn't metter how long you're gone, if fans like what they're hearing, they'll be fans. look at green day or metallica.

mshinoda (10:34):RME: we actually just got the idea while we were in rehearsal. once we figured out the first few notes, the whole song came back to us. that was pretty cool, seeing as how

mshinoda (10:38):new album: it will sound familiar, and you will recognize it as LP; butso far it has a different sound that i cannot describe. it sounds like it's older, but not vintage. more organic in some spots, like

mshinoda (10:39):just yesterday we recorded a song with no samples that is completely raw. other songs are full of samples. lots of variety at this point--but we don't know which songs will make the final album.

mshinoda (10:52):world, and people all over have requested it for other things. we're hoping to do a new video for it--the concept for it is really cool, i think. i hope that works out.

mshinoda (10:54):i am planning to do my first galley art show (exciting!) -- it will be in LA. i don't know the date yet, but i want to show all the original paintings from the fort minor artwork, plus a handfull of new ones. all

mshinoda (10:54):all the paintings are acrylic / spraypaint / ink on canvas, and range from 24x24" to 36x48" in size.

mshinoda (10:55):there will be paintings from private collections (mostly from my bandmates) and a bunch that none of you have ever seen.

mshinoda (10:56):RIGHT NOW: that's really cool! i got the idea from one of my favorite movies -- a film called "short cuts" by robert altman. check it out!

A NOTE FROM MCR ABOUT STREET SCENE SHOW

Dear Everyone,

Now that the dust has settled and we are healing and moving forward, we felt it best to explain to everyone to some degree what has happened to MCR in the past week. There are tons of rumors and allegations floating around and we want to clear it all up for you. We also want to express our gratitude for the concern, care, and understanding all of our fans and friends have shown us in the past week. Here are the facts for you all and please know that none of the injuries sustained were permanent nor intentional and it really proves that sometimes these things happen and every person should truly value what they have.

Last week, while shooting a new video for our new record, 2 of us sustained some damage more than we normally would have. Gerard tore multiple ligaments in his ankle and Bob received a bad burn to the back of his leg. These injuries were sustained on Thursday evening. On Friday morning we drove to San Diego to prepare for our performance at Street Scene that we were very excited about. After seeing doctors, we decided to give it our all and rehearse on Friday night. This proved impossible. The pain was overwhelming and we could not pull through without further injuring ourselves. We hate canceling shows, especially now that we are done recording and just want to play. So there you have it, there were no car wrecks, monster attacks or alien abductions, but there were serious injuries that required this to be the way. We apologize for it coming down so last minute and never wished it to end up that way. We promise to be back in San Diego this year.

Frontwoman Amy Lee broke the news to the band's fans late Thursday in a post to the Evanescence online message board. "A few weeks ago, Will decided to leave the band," she wrote. "He said that he just can't go through with another huge tour right now, and wants to stay a little closer to his family instead."

Lee said that touring "is hard — you kind of have to sacrifice your life for it. So we can all understand." She added that Evanescence "love Will very much," and that they collectively wish him "nothing but happiness in everything he does. We've been playing music together since I was in junior high. I miss him already."

Fear not, Lee wrote: The departure won't affect the band beyond the annoyance of searching for and hiring Boyd's replacement. Evanescence's forthcoming album, The Open Door, will still be in stores October 3 (see "Amy Lee Says New Evanescence LP Has More Sensuality"), and the band's to-be-announced touring plans will not be derailed.

Boyd's exodus is the second in recent years for the band. Back in 2003, one of the Arkansas band's founding members, lead guitarist and principal songwriter Ben Moody, exited midway through Evanescence's European tour (see "Evanescence Soldier On Without Ben Moody, Look Forward To Recording"). Moody was immediately replaced on the road by former Cold guitarist Terry Balsamo, who suffered a stroke caused by a torn neck artery eight months ago. He was made a permanent band fixture in 2004 (see "Evanescence Name New Guitarist").

A spokesperson for the band's label confirmed Boyd's departure Friday morning (July 14).

Look what Daphne and I discovered at Baybeats 2006. Nice! This year's festival is much, much crowded compared to the previous two years. I'm sure the good reviews in the past have brought in the new crowd. Only thing was, most of them are bumbling teenagers who don't care about being courteous. Old person like me gets irritated easily by their behaviours. Well, I'm still glad they went. It makes the festival much livelier and rowdier.

Astreal was formed in 1992 with influences ranging from shoegaze/noise bands, ambient soundscapes to electronica and rock.

The band were prolific in output from the start, and after releasing two sel-recorded demos, "Dive Gemma" (1993) and "Chlorine Explosion" (1994), they went on to release a full length album "Ouijablush" under the illustrious Pony Canyon label which to this day remains as one of the landmark local releases from that period. Astreal also appeared in the BigO Singles Club CD no. 13 in 1996. Following that is the "No excuse Compilation" by Pony Canyon in 1997. Astreal released their second full-length album "Fragments of the Same Dead Star" in 2004, a collection of 11 songs which is a spacey hybrid of indie/electronica that reflects the band's progression into darker, more incendiary grooves while still retaining all the grit they have come to be known for.
Astreal has played at some of these venues. In no particular order: the World Trade Centre, the Substation, Zouk Club, oosh Club, the Hard Rock Café Singapore, LASALLE College of the Arts, Kream Club, Bar None and Singapore Youth Park.

Epic U.K. Rockers Muse Return With Cinematic New Album
Trio's "Black Holes and Revelations" features experiments with electronica and flamenco

Orchestral rock trio Muse return on July 11th with Black Holes and Revelations, the follow-up to 2003's Absolution. The lead single, the electronica-tinged "Supermassive Black Hole," has just hit radio, driven by singer Matthew Bellamy's trademark falsetto.

"That song is completely opposite to what the band has been doing in the past," says Bellamy of the first track off their fourth effort. "I like it a lot. It shows a different side of the band. It's got more of a groove element to it, and it's nice if guitar bands can steal back the dance floor a little bit."

In order to create Black Holes over the last year, Bellamy, drummer Dominic Howard and bassist Chris Wolstenhome teamed with longtime associate Rich Costey, who served as co-producer. Bellamy allowed his imagination to run wild lyrically -- "Glaciers melting in the dead of night/And the superstars sucked into the supermassive," he sings on the single -- and he found himself drawn to electronica, as well as harmonium and brass lines.

"I like trying to find inspiration from those more unknown areas of yourself," Bellamy explains. "The reason why the trumpets and some of the other stranger instrumentations came in is we didn't hold back in terms of taking a fringe idea to its full extent," says Bellamy, describing the resulting sound as "filmlike."

The cinematic feel of tracks such as "City of Delusion" and "Knights of Cydonia" might be due to the frontman's recent relocation from his native Britain to Italy. Living not far from actor George Clooney's digs, the singer-guitarist immersed himself in local six-string music. "From living in northern Italy, I became interested in southern Italian music and music from the South of Spain, like flamenco guitar," says Bellamy. "When you hear it, it sounds like the music from the [spaghetti] western films."

The move sent him back in time musically, but when he set about writing lyrics, they came out brimming with modern topics. "Exo Politics" charts an "orchestrated alien invasion for the purpose of increasing military budgets and building space weapons," he says, while "A Soldier's Poem" is about fighting back. "I'm singing from the perspective of the person who's at the bottom of the pyramid awakening to the fact that they are being played as a pawn," Bellamy explains. "It's about wanting to fight against that and wanting to make a change."

Muse will tour the U.S. in July.

Linkin Park emcee readies Fort Minor November debut with Common, Legend

Linkin Park emcee/producer Mike Shinoda will become the first member of the multi-platinum act to release a solo album when he unveils his debut, as Fort Minor, on November 22nd. Shinoda says the album, The Rising Tied, is an opportunity for him to get back to his roots of making hip-hop beats in his room.

Rising features diverse guest appearances from Common, on the stylish "Back Home," the Roots' Black Thought, John Legend and Linkin DJ Joe Hahn, as well as Ethiopian-born alt-funk rocker Kenna and two acts signed to Linkin's Machine Shop Records, hip-hop duo Styles of Beyond and singer Holly Brooke. The album runs a gamut of topics and styles -- from the poignant "Kenji," about the internment of Japanese-Americans in World War II (with vocal samples by Shinoda's father and aunt), to the possible lead single, "Believe Me," whose beat pays homage to New York hip-hoppers Boogie Down Productions and the Wu-Tang Clan.

Rolling Stone speaks via phone with the rapper from Paris while he wraps up a brief European tour and prepares to head to Miami for the MTV Video Music Awards, which he helped score.
